Sixteenth time lucky: Cech finally saves a penalty for Arsenal!

The hapless ex-Chelsea shot-stopper had seen 15 previous kicks nestle in the net before finally keeping out Troy Deeney on Sunday

Sunday was a momentous day for Petr Cech, who finally managed to save a penalty for Arsenal on the 16th attempt.

The Czech goalkeeper has enjoyed a career that would be the envy of most, having starred for both Chelsea and the Gunners in the English top flight.

But his penalty record since joining Arsenal is not a source of pride, as successive takers have made him suffer from the spot.

Prior to Sunday's clash with Watford, Cech had seen 15 straight spot-kicks slip past him in Arsenal colours.

What's more, on 12 occasions the keeper had dived the wrong way.

But he finally broke the curse in saving Troy Deeney's penalty, after Ainsley Maitland-Niles had brought down Roberto Pereyra in the box.

"He scored the penalty when we played the first game," Cech told Sky after the game of Deeney. "He surprised me in the first game by going the other side. Sometimes you have the feeling, and I had that feeling. I felt my timing was quite good to put him off."

It was a fine save, and kept his clean sheet intact - the 200th of his Premier League career as Arsenal eventually ran out 3-0 winners at the Emirates Stadium.

"It's an unbelievable personal milestone," Cech said of his 200th clean sheet.

"We had nine clean sheets in 18 games at the start of the season to reach 199. Since then we've had to wait 11 games. So it was frustrating, but the most important thing is the team."

Cech also broke an incredible run of more than seven years since his last penalty stop.

That save had come against Fulham back in February 2011, while he was still a Chelsea player.
