Premier League table: Who has been the best team in 2017?

Chelsea may be marching to the Premier League title but the Blues have not separated themselves from the rest of the pack in 2017 so far.

Antonio Conte's men lost their first game of the new year to Tottenham but have gone unbeaten since then to ensure they remain comfortably in control at the summit of the table.

They have been matched by both Spurs and Everton, however, in terms of points collected since January 1, with those two teams currently three points better off than Chelsea but having played one game more.

Having won five, drawn two and lost one, Manchester City have also kept up with the Blues by collecting 17 points from eight matches for an identical record.

Here is the Premier League table based only on games played in 2017 in full:

Middlesbrough's decision to replace Aitor Karanka becomes less surprising when you consider that they have collected just four points this year, while Leicester City had picked up just one - from a 0-0 draw against Boro - under Claudio Ranieri before Craig Shakespeare took over and recorded back-to-back wins.

While Chelsea, Spurs and Man City look well placed to secure Champions League qualification, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool have taken turns to trip up over the past three months in the battle for fourth place.

United's defensive record is certainly improving under Jose Mourinho and they have conceded just three times this year, but an overreliance on Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been exposed at the other end.

Ex-Bayern Munich and Real Madrid assistant Paul Clement, meanwhile, deserves enormous credit for the job he has done at Swansea City and could take another big step towards steering them clear of relegation at Bournemouth this weekend.
