Newcastle Jets-Audax Italiano friendly cancelled

Newcastle Jets' friendly with Chilean outfit Audax Italian has been cancelled "due to factors outside the club's control".

In a statement, Jets CEO Lawrie McKinna insisted the A-League club have done everything they could to assist a match promoter in organising the match.

The game was set to be held at McDonald Jones Stadium on July 8 and anyone who has purchased tickets will be refunded.

"Club staff have worked diligently to assist the match promoter leading into what would have been a unique international friendly for our club, team, members and fans," McKinna said.

"Nevertheless, factors outside of our control mean that Audax Italiano will no longer travel to Australia next month.

"All fans that have purchased a ticket to the match will be refunded in full. We apologise to our members and fans who, like us, were looking forward to this fixture early in our 2017 pre-season."

The news casts doubt on Newcastle's partnership with Audax, with McKinna and Jets owner Martin Lee having visited Chile in March to cement the alliance.

Newcastle are supposed to become Audax's show window to sell players into Asia.
