Mumbai City FC have suffered three consecutive defeats at the Mumbai Football Arena and coach Alexandre Guimaraes is under massive pressure to get them to winning ways this weekend.

They have five matches to go and should they go on a winning spree, they have a decent chance of qualifying for the play-offs. Of their last five matches, only two are against top sides – FC Pune City (home) and Chennaiyin FC (away).

The Islanders need to win against Pune to keep themselves in the mix for a berth in the play-offs.

They have been creating several scoring opportunities but haven’t been able to convert them. Balwant Singh, who was the star striker for the team earlier in the season, has been wasteful upfront lately although he did score a fortuitous goal in Goa.

Thiago Santos has arguably been one of the best signings for the Mumbai club. The Brazilian attacker can dribble past defenders with ease and brings the ‘x’ factor to the team.

The cause of concern for Mumbai has been their full-backs with none being able to do a decent job. Opposition teams expose their frailties in wide areas.

Mumbai City are one of the teams who chose not to make use of the winter transfer window. Probably, they should have given how ineffective their striker Rafa Jorda has been. The Spanish forward has played 316 minutes and doesn’t have a single goal to his name.

FC Pune City come into the tie on the back of a slender 1-0 win over NorthEast United. It took Marcelinho’s brilliance in the end which won them three crucial points as Pune are among the favourites to qualify to the play-offs for the very first time.

The presence of Marcos Tebar, who is arguably among the best foreign midfielders in the ISL, lends solidity to their side. However, despite all of their brilliance, Pune are at times heavily reliant on Marcelinho, Diego Carlos and Emiliano Alfaro to produce a moment of magic.

Also while Gurtej Singh has done well this season, at times he has been caught out of position and given the fact that he isn’t the quickest, the likes of Everton and Thiago Santos can cause trouble.

Pune also have some of the best young players in the ISL – Ashique Kuruniyan, Sahil Panwar, Sarthak Golui and Vishal Kaith. Panwar in particular has been the breakthrough player this season given how he has managed to keep the more experienced Lalchchuanmawia Fanai on the bench.

Mumbai need to be wary of Pune’s height advantage as except for one or two players, almost everyone in the starting eleven is tall.

A must win tie for Mumbai, Pune have a chance to close the gap at the top and doing the double over Islanders.
