FC Goa and Chennaiyin FC lock horns in the match 71 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Goa.
It is a crucial encounter for both the sides who are competing for a spot in the playoffs. Chennaiyin are currently placed at the fourth position on the league table with 23 points, five less than second-placed FC Pune City and eight behind leaders Bengaluru FC.
The points table clearly suggests that John Gregory’s team are not in a position to relax, especially after their poor show against Bengaluru FC. They lost 1-3 at home to the Blues but only managed a 1-1 draw against bottom-placed Delhi Dynamos in Delhi. Three points in Goa may not confirm Chennaiyin’s place in the last four stage but it will boost their hopes of reaching the playoffs.
The good thing for the Marina Machans is that they do not have any injury concern and they will also welcome back skipper and star defender Henrique Sereno after a one-match suspension.
The home side FC Goa started this season with a bang and were at the top of the league for quite some time. But as the league progressed, their form dipped and they plummetted down the table and are now currently placed in the sixth position. In the last eight games, they picked up only eight points. Also, they were lucky to win against Jamshedpur at home - a game more memorable for refereeing mistakes.
The Gaurs are on a three-match winless streak with two defeats and a draw. Losing eight points out of nine have raised a question on their qualification to the playoff stage. Sergio Lobera’s boys need to up their game by a notch in this last lap of the marathon league if they want to book their berth.
FC Goa do not have any major injury concern in their squad. Winger Brandon Fernandes, who has been an automatic choice in the starting XI under Sergio Lobera this season, is not fully fit. Fernandes had suffered a knee injury against NorthEast United on February 4th.
There is a possibility of Lobera handing a start to Hugo Boumous in place of Edu Bedia. The Moroccan will certainly look to impress as he has been signed as a replacement for Manuel Arana, a player who scored three and provided a couple of assists.
Defensively, they have been brittle and it’s about time that they tighten up at the back. Chennaiyin FC are not the most prolific scorers but are known to nick a goal or two if afforded an opportunity.
The two coaches have a different set of philosophies and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top in what promises to be an enthralling affair.
