Inter confident of extending Icardi deal in summer, says Ausilio

The 25-year-old remains a pivotal player for the Milan side and they hope to ensure he snubs interest from Real Madrid to stay even longer

Inter have no reason to fear losing Mauro Icardi in the near future as they plan to open negotiations over a new contract at the end of the season, director of sport Piero Ausilio says.

The 25-year-old striker netted twice in Saturday's 3-0 win over Hellas Verona to take him up to 24 goals and one assist in Serie A this season, meaning he has played a decisive role in half of his side's tally in the league.

Despite the Argentine's consistency in front of goal in recent years, Inter have been unable to challenge for domestic and European titles, leading to Icardi being linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Although he is tied to the San Siro side until 2021, Inter want Icardi to extend his stay even further and are sure he will sign a new deal in the summer, according to Ausilio.

"There are no figures, there have been no meetings, there is only the desire and the pleasure of moving forward together," he told Mediaset Premium. "We will talk about it at the end of the season.

"There is no problem, as he has another three years on his deal, this is the important thing. Icardi is important for the club and he knows it.

"He has already renewed his contract three times since he came to Inter. We’re happy to keep him with us for many more years."

Inter sit fourth in the table under Luciano Spalletti and are looking to seal their place in next season's Champions League. Having gone through six coaches in the last two years, it has been suggested that Spalletti's future in Milan depends on them getting into the tournament, but Ausilio is sure they will continue with him regardless.

"We are very happy with his work, beyond the individual matches, for us there is no problem," he said.

"Spalletti is the present and the future of Inter. We have nothing to worry about."
