Frank Lampard currently sits top of the list of goalscorers with three goals in two games. Which of his team-mates is most likely to overhaul his tally? Al Hain-Cole investigates
Currently sitting top of the pack is vice-captain Frank Lampard, whose two penalties in the opening two matches have helped him to a healthy three-goal haul so far.
With such a head start, the Chelsea midfielder is understandably the favourite with William Hill to finish on top of the goal pile, at even money (2.00).
Jemain Defoe's strike in the opening Group H game against Moldova means that he has now scored 17 goals in his last 19 starts for his country, and having started the season in fine form for Tottenham, the forward seems an attractive option at odds of 6/1 (7.00).
However, Defoe may find his first-team opportunities limited following the return from injury of talisman Wayne Rooney, and the current squad's record goal scorer is more than capable of hitting the ground running and making up for lost time.
The Manchester United man has finished as top-scorer in England's last two qualification campaigns, and offers great value at 7/1 (8.00) to outscore his team-mates this time.
Other options up front for Roy Hodgson include the relatively inexperienced duo of Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck, and the pair's two goals between them make them outsiders at 9/1 (10.00) each.
Theo Walcott is crying out to be played as a striker, but his usual position on the wing means that he would do well to improve on his current record of four goals in 29 caps and win England's "Golden Boot" on the road to Rio, at odds of 10/1 (11.00).
Steven Gerrard has 19 goals to his name for The Three Lions, but his deeper role in Hodgson's lineup makes him unlikely at 16/1 (17.00) to come out on top.
James Milner bagged his first international goal in the thrashing of Moldova, but is a long-shot at 20/1 (21.00) to add significantly enough to that tally.
