Chris Coleman will be desperate to get a first win under his belt, but Al Hain-Cole thinks he will need some magic from the Liverpool winger if his untried squad are to beat El TriWales travel to America in search of their first win under Chris Coleman, but will have their work cut out against an accomplished Mexico side.
The Dragons’ last game was also against North American opposition, as Costa Rica ruined an emotional first game in charge for Gary Speed’s successor by winning 1-0 at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Few expect Wales to fare much better against the Mexicans, and they are priced at a whopping 5/1 (6.00) with William Hill to emerge victorious.
This is no doubt largely due to the injury problems that have seen key men such as Gareth Bale, Joe Ledley and David Vaughan withdraw from the squad, to be replaced by a number of uncapped novices.
Mexico, on the other hand, should field a strong team and are therefore overwhelming 8/15 (1.53) favourites to overcome their injury-stricken opponents.
The two sides have only ever met once before, drawing 1-1 at the 1958 World Cup, and you can get odds of 3/1 (4.00) on them cancelling each other out again this time.
The Mexicans can rely on the deadly Javier Hernandez to provide the goals; the Manchester United striker’s record of 23 goals in 34 games makes him a relatively safe bet at 10/11 (1.91) to score at anytime.
Without Bale, Wales may have to hope that Craig Bellamy will come up with the goods, and the Liverpool striker’s return to the international fold will provide Coleman with a timely boost.
At 11/4 (3.75), he is surely the best Welsh hope of finding the net against El Tricolor.
Whatever you do, make sure you keep watching right up until the end, as late goals have been a regular feature of Mexico’s recent games.
A bet on a goal to be scored in the last 15 minutes of the match would have paid out in four of the last five Mexican games, so it could well be worth having a go this time at 19/20 (1.95).
