thumbnail Hello,

Goals from David O'Sullivan and Mark Salmon put Longford through to the third round of the FAI Ford Cup with a win over their local rivals

Longford Town overcame rivals Athlone Town to book their place in the third round of the FAI Ford Cup thanks to late goals from David O'Sullivan and Mark Salmon.

David O’Sullivan opened the scoring for Longford Town with 15 minutes remaining when he headed home from a James Mulhall cross with the Athlone keeper unable to keep it out.

Longford doubled their advantage after the restart when the referee pointed to the spot after David O’Sullivan was taken down by Athlone captain Alan Byrne. Mark Salmon stepped up to convert from penalty to seal their place in the next round of the FAI Ford Cup.

The visitors were the most dangerous side in the opening stages, and were unfortunate not to open the scoring when Mark Salmon's long range free-kick went just past the post.

As the away side pilled on the pressure, Athlone were only able to create chances from Neil Harney's long through balls, but Philip Gorman and Mark Hughes did little to trouble Paul Hunt.

Athlone were again under more pressure when Mark Salmon's corner was eventually cleared off the line by Neil Harney after Gary Shaw's powerful header.

The home team entered the second-half with a re-organised midfield creating more balance, and this worked in their favour when Sean Byrne broke free of the defence before shooting from outside of the area, which forced Paul Skinner into a difficult save.

However, Longford finally got the win they deserved through O'Sullivan and Salmon's late goals to seal their progress to the third round.
