James McCarthy has hailed Everton as a "great club" after picking up the Toffees' Player of the Month award.

McCarthy scooped the accolade after a month in which he was a permanent fixture in the Everton starting XI. Roberto Martinez's side have lost just once in the league so far and are now up to fifth in the English Premier League, with 31 points.

Speaking to the club's official website, the 23-year-old explained that he has "really enjoyed" his first months at Goodison Park and paid tribute to the supporters for the welcome he has received since arriving from Wigan Athletic.

"It is brilliant to be the player of the month. I am delighted to pick up an award at such a great club," McCarthy said.

"I have really enjoyed my first few months. We are getting results and doing well as a team," he added. "The boys have helped me settle in quickly with the great team spirit and I am really enjoying life.

"The supporters have been brilliant since day one. They have really made me feel welcome and you can hear them when you are on the pitch no matter where you go.

"It's a great, great cub with great, great supporters."
