Ian Baraclough has added two new players to his squad for the 2014 Airtricity League season, bringing in the experienced goalkeeper and midfielder
The FAI Cup winners had been expected to confirm the signing of Russell after the midfielder was appointed the Football Association of Ireland officer for the region. The Galway native is looking forward to playing for the Bit o' Red while also undertaking his FAI duties. "I know I will be able to combine both my positions," Russell told the club's official website. "I'm really looking forward to the year ahead.
"I was here before and loved it here, winning three Cups. I'm on the back of winning a league title and I want more. Sligo Rovers will only benefit from signing the likes of Richard Brush as well. He is a great character to have."
Sligo manager Ian Baraclough unveiled his new signings, speaking of his delight at adding 29-year-old Brush and and 28-year-old Russell. "I think John will prove to be a terrific signing," Baraclough said. "He has grown up a lot with more experience including a league title with Pat's. As far as I'm concerned being a development officer for the Sligo region and playing for Sligo Rovers is a perfect match.
"I didn't sit down and target having the squad as close to completion as it is now. But the signings we wanted have come to fruition."
