Pilkington and Green start for Ireland against Austria

The Norwich City winger is set to make his first start for the Boys in Green, while Paul Green has been chosen to replace the injured Glenn Whelan in the middle of the park
Giovanni Trapattoni has named his Republic of Ireland starting XI to face Austria in Vienna on Tuesday, September 10.

Paul Green has been selected in midfield to replace the injured Glenn Whelan, after the Stoke City midfielder was forced to withdraw from the squad with a hamstring injury.

Trapattoni has also made one other change from the side which was beaten 2-1 by Sweden on Friday night, with Anthony Pilkington set to make his first start instead of Wigan Athletic winger James McClean.

Speaking to the media, Trapattoni acknowledged the need to pick up three points against Austria, but stressed that there were three games left to play.

"We know the only objective is win," he told reporters. "Only with this result we can keep our hopes alive. But we still have three matches."
