Glenn Whelan came off the bench for Stoke City to win the free-kick for Jermaine Pennant's game-winning goal as the Potters overcame West Ham United at Upton Park. Marc Wilson had started the game in midfield for the visitors, and put in a solid performance.
Andy Reid opened the scoring at the DW Stadium with an eighth minute free-kick, but could not help his side defeat Wigan Athletic, as the Latics came back to win 2-1. James McCarthy impressed in midfield as Owen Coyle's side climbed to eighth in the table.
Richard Dunne came through another 90 minutes unscathed for Queens Park Rangers, helping his side to a 1-0 away win over Leeds United. Paddy Kenny was between the sticks for the Whites, and should have done better with Joey Barton's free-kick, allowing Clint Hill in to score the only goal of the game.
Leyton Orient recorded their best ever start to a season with a fifth successive win, defeating Colchester United 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. Dubliner David Mooney opened the scoring for the Os on 13 minutes with a close-range finish against his former club.
Wolverhampton Wanderers climbed to second in the table thanks to a 3-1 win over Port Vale. Kevin Doyle started up front for Wolves, but was disappointed not to open his tally for the season and was replaced by Ireland under-21 international Anthony Forde 10 minutes from time.
Padraig Amond scored his first goal since signing for Morecambe, grabbing a late winner in their 2-1 win over Plymouth Argyle. Compatriot Barry Roche was beaten from the spot in the first-half, but produced some good saves late on to help his side to three points.
Chesterfield climbed to first in the League Two table with a 2-0 win over Portsmouth. Eoin Doyle came off the bench to provide the cross for Armand Gnanduillet's 86th minute opener. Pompey were forced to play with 10-men for most of the game as David Connolly was sent off for an elbow on Sam Hird in the 38th minute.
Anthony Stokes continued his impressive week for Celtic, scoring a late free-kick to give them a 1-0 win over Dundee United and move the Bhoys to second in the Scottish Premiership table. The Dubliner was a threat from the outset, but took 87 minutes to breach the Tangerine defence.
Inverness Caledonian Thistle remain at the top of the table with a 2-0 win over Hearts. Richie Foran impressed for ICT, and almost scored a sensational 30-yard effort, but was denied by a great save from Jamie MacDonald.
Robbie Keane took his 2013 tally to 12 Major League Soccer goals with two against San Jose Earthquakes in Los Angeles Galaxy's 3-0 win. Keane's first came from the spot before adding a second with a well-taken finish in the 68th minute.
Darren O'Dea played the full game for Metalurh Donetsk in their 1-0 loss to Volyn. The Republic of Ireland defender did well until the 86th minute when a long ball allowed Dmytro Kozban in to score the only goal of the game.
Barry Maguire watched from the bench as VVV defeated MVV 3-1 in the Eerste Divisie, but the Irish-eligible midfielder will play no further games for the club this season after his contract was terminated by mutual consent on Sunday evening.
