thumbnail Hello,

The Candystripes were handed a tough Europa League draw which will see them take on Turkish outfit Trabzonspor and Devine realises the enormity of the task that awaits his team

Derry City manager Declan Devine has admitted that his team could not have received tougher opposition after they were drawn against Turkish outfit Trabzonspor in the second qualifying round of the Europa League.

Nevertheless, despite the daunting task that awaits his side, the Candystripes boss is eagerly anticipating the challenge of facing "a top club in Europe" and being a part of "another chapter" in the history of Derry City.

"We probably couldn't have got a more difficult tie," Devine told the Londonderry Sentinel. "But at the same time it will be a huge challenge for the football club. It's another chapter in the history of the club, facing a top club in Europe."

Devine acknowledged that Trabzonspor were a formidable team, noting that there were several internationals in their squad, including former Tottenham Hostpur midfielder Didier Zokora and Turkish international Halil Altintop. And the Derry boss stressed that he would have to strenuously prepare for the game.

"We will have to do our homework. They possess a lot of quality players, players that have Premier League experience, players that are full internationals and they spend a lot of money on recruitment. It will be a difficult tie but we look forward to seeing how far we can go."

He continued: "Obviously we will prepare right for the game. We will certainly be trying to progress through the tie, but we're under no illusions, it's a very difficult tie for us.

"Trabzonspor, Standard Liege and Dinamo Minsk were among the top teams in the draw and we've got one of them. It's going to be sweltering heat in Turkey, it will be a difficult venue to go to.

"They are one of the top clubs out there and it will be difficult but it's a new challenge, a new experience for the club, our supporters and our players and it is certainly one that we look forward to," added Devine.
