Giovanni Trapattoni's assistant coach has revealed that the Wigan Athletic midfielder promised that he would travel to New York to take on the world and European champions

Republic of Ireland assistant manager Marco Tardelli has indicated that James McCarthy will be involved in the forthcoming international friendly against Spain.

The Wigan Athletic midfielder is suspended for Ireland's World Cup qualification clash against the Faroe Islands on Friday, June 7 and has been allowed to leave the squad temporarily.

Although he had been carrying a slight groin strain, McCarthy is expected to re-join the Irish squad in New York for the friendly against the world and European Champions on June 11, with Tardelli revealing that the 22-year-old had given him "his word".

"James McCarthy gave me his word and shook my hand and said that he would come back," he told reporters.

Meanwhile, several players sat out training on Tuesday, June 4, including Stoke City defender Marc Wilson and Millwall goalkeeper David Forde.

Richard Dunne, who made a return to action as a late substitute against Georgia on Sunday, also sat out the majority of the session at Malahide.

Nevertheless, all three are expected to return to training ahead of the clash with the Faroe Islands on Friday, June 7.
