Jason Byrne's decision to delay his retirement for at least another season is proving to be the correct one as he continues to terrorise defences up and down the country. The veteran striker bagged a hat-trick on Friday to help Bray Wanderers secure a vital three points over Drogheda United as well as propelling the forward towards two hundred goals in the League of Ireland.

Pat Devlin's side experienced a turbulent start to the season as they found themselves with just one victory from the opening series of fixtures but their fortunes have turned around in recent weeks largely thanks to the form of their clinical frontman. Byrne may not possess the speed and youthful exuberance he once did but he makes up for it with his ability to find space in the box, where he comes alive. Friday's 3-2 victory over Mick Cooke's side only highlighted this as he clinically converted all three opportunities served up to him and took his tally for the campaign to six.

Now in his fifteenth season, the 35-year-old's goal scoring exploits don't appear to be slowing down and he is close to becoming only the second player to reach the 200 mark in the League of Ireland. There is no doubt that the evergreen Byrne has plenty left to offer the Seagulls and will have one eye on Brendan Bradley's record tally of 235 League of Ireland goals.
