Hull City midfielder David Meyler has praised the influence of Steve Bruce after the Tigers secured promotion to the Premier League.

The 23-year-old, who was brought to Sunderland from Cork City by Bruce in 2008, paid tribute to his manager and believes that the former Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic boss "gets the best out of his players".

"I think the character and resilience of this side is superb and I think that comes from the gaffer," Meyler told the club's official website. "It's the way he is as a person, the way he was as a player and the way he is as a manger. He's been brilliant for us.

"We saw on Saturday (against Cardiff) how he gets the best out of his players and we're obviously all delighted about that. We can all have a good summer now and look forward to coming back and working hard in pre-season."

Meyler initially joined Hull on loan from Sunderland in November 2012, before signing a three-and-a-half-year deal with the club in January 2013 and the Republic of Ireland international revealed that has no regrets about his decision to drop down a division.

"A lot of people questioned me when I came here," he said. "But I sat down and spoke to my dad and he said 'if you want to go to Hull City, make sure you're back in the Premier League come August'.

"We're there now and this is what the club aimed to do. It feels brilliant."
