LEAGUE OF IRELAND PLAYER OF THE WEEK
SEAN RUSSELL| UCD
Martin Russell's side had yet to register a league victory in 2013 before Friday but an organised and resolute defensive performance, coupled with a counter-attacking strategy, saw the hosts run-out surprise 2-0 winners. And, it was versatile midfielder Sean Russell who was at the heart of the performance.
As the game wore on, Russell came into his own and it was his free-kick that set up the crucial opening goal on 75 minutes. Shortly after, he capped a fine individual performance and sealed the victory with a well taken breakaway goal. Any side that loses the likes of Paul Corry and Paul O'Conor from their midfield engine room are likely to struggle but the emergence of Russell from the long Belfield production line may just go some way to replace the now departed duo.
The Irish schools international, who is the son of UCD boss Martin Russell, made his League of Ireland debut in 2010 but struggled to break into the first team before this season. He has been troubled by various injury problems in recent times but if he can stay fit, Russell will become a key player in the Students' midfield as they look to climb the table.
