Glenn Whelan sits out Republic of Ireland training session

The midfielder was rested for the afternoon training session as part of his recovery programme, and remains in contention for Tuesday's game against Austria
Stoke City midfielder Glenn Whelan sat out the Republic of Ireland's Sunday training session as a precaution after failing in his fitness bid for last night's World Cup qualifier against Sweden.

Whelan was initially named in the starting XI for the match in Stockholm, but an ankle injury ruled him out of the 0-0 draw, with James McCarthy taking his place in midfield. While the rest of the squad trained in Gannon Park this afternoon, Whelan watched on, with a Football Association of Ireland press release stating that it was "part of his recovery programme and he remains a possibility for the match against Austria."

Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has no other injury worries ahead of Tuesday's home qualifier against Austria at the Aviva Stadium.
