Paul Green starts for Ireland against Sweden in World Cup qualifier

Giovanni Trapattoni has opted for the Leeds man in place of James McCarthy while Robbie Brady could yet be omitted from the line-up
Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has selected Paul Green to partner Glenn Whelan in midfield for the crucial World Cup qualifier against Sweden in Stockholm on Friday evening.

The Leeds United man had been tipped to be given the nod ahead of James McCarthy all week after playing in the role during training games with assistant manager Marco Tardelli suggesting that Green possessed an 'aggressive' style of play that would be more suited to countering the threat of Swedish captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Meanwhile, the Italian tactician has named Hull City winger Robbie Brady in the XI for Friday's Group C encounter but revealed he wants to see him in training once more before making a final decision with Andy Keogh on standby.

As expected, David Forde starts in goal with Ciaran Clark once again partnering John O'Shea at the heart of the defence. Up front, captain Robbie Keane returns after sitting out February's friendly against Poland.
