With Danny North still sidelined through injury, Sligo boss Ian Baraclough was in desperate need of a clinical striker in front of goal as the Bit o'Red look to defend their title in 2013.

And early indications suggest that he has got just that in experienced frontman Anthony Elding, after he scored the only goal of the game as the champions won in Derry on the first matchnight of the Premier Division season.

Friday's strike at the Brandywell capped off an excellent start to the 30-year-old's career at the Showgrounds after he marked his club debut with an impressive man-of-the-match display against Glentoran on Monday.

Elding set up the opening goal in Sligo's 5-0 rout in the Setanta Sports Cup as well as finding the net himself.

With a career spanning over 12 years and with 400-odd appearances to his name, Elding has plenty of experience and goalscoring know-how and if his first two performances in Ireland are anything to go by, then he will prove to be a very shrewd acquisition by Baraclough.
