Richard Dunne set to miss World Cup qualifiers against Sweden and Austria

The Aston Villa centre back has suffered a series of set backs with his groin injury and will not be included in the Ireland squad for forthcoming qualifiers
Aston Villa defender Richard Dunne will not be included in the Republic of Ireland squad to face Sweden and Austria on March 22 and 26 respectively, Giovanni Trapattoni has confirmed.

The 33-year-old centre back has struggled to regain fitness after suffering a series of set-backs with his groin injury, which has ruled him out of action since June 2012, and will not be named in the squad for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers.

However, Stoke City defender Marc Wilson is expected to return to the squad after making a full recovery from a broken leg, while Everton full back Seamus Coleman is also in line for a call-up.

Meanwhile, Trapattoni is also expected to provide an update regarding the position of Everton midfielder Darron Gibson, who has made himself unavailable for selection since Euro 2012.

Elsewhere, West Bromich Albion striker Shane Long is expected to be included in the squad, despite picking up an ankle knock last week.

Giovanni Trapattoni is expected to announce his full squad for the qualifiers against Sweden and Austria at 12.00 BST on Friday, March 8.
