It has been a tough few years for the Boynesiders since their triumphant double-winning season of 2007 but last season's campaign will have fans optimistic.

Many predicted that Drogs would struggle last season, but Mick Cooke's workmanlike side were deserved runners-up. However, this year's league will likely prove to be a tougher test with the likes of Shamrock Rovers trying to get back in title contention.

Drogheda look light in numbers at the back and injuries to key defenders could prove disastrous. In saying that, overall their squad should be stronger this year with decent additions to their midfield and attacking options.

Of the newcomers, Paul O'Conor and Gary O'Neill have been particularly impressive during a pre-season campaign that has seen the Louth team score, as well as leak, plenty of goals.

This indicates that regardless of where they finish, Drogs will be worth watching this year. The key to Drogheda's success will be the form of the Ryan and Gavin Brennan as well as veteran striker Declan 'Fabio' O'Brien.

Drogheda will seriously rely on this trio if they are to prove that last season was progress and not a fluke.
