The Republic of Ireland international believes that the emphatic victory away to Brian McDermott's side can provide the Latics with enough momentum to avoid relegation
Roberto Martinez's side currently hover above the relegation zone in 17th position, but they are level on points with 18th-placed Aston Villa. However, McCarthy believes that the 3-0 victory over relegation rivals Reading on Saturday February 23 can help provide the requisite momentum to avoid the drop.
"It's so important to get out of the bottom three and try and build on positive results like this one and we've got 11 games left to make sure that we do that," he told the club's official website.
"They're 11 cup finals and we want to try and get as high as we can in the league but we won’t be getting carried away now and we'll get straight back to work to make sure we follow this through."
He continued: "It's important to have got the three points especially away against Reading because it's a confidence boost, it keeps up momentum and they have been on a good run recently which is something we need to stop considering their league position and ours.
"At half time we just all wanted to keep the intensity up and keep going because we knew that the game was far from over especially when Reading are at home and they carry on fighting when they go behind.
"We've seen that they can come back from 2-0 down because they've done it before and we were determined to get the third goal and kill them off," concluded McCarthy
