Nine players have been handed their debut under-17 call-up as Tom Mohan looks to finalise his squad for the Boys in Green's upcoming Euro 2013 campaign
The Republic of Ireland under-21s are in action against UEFA Regions Cup participant Leinster and Munster, with Noel King calling up an exclusively domestic-based squad for the friendly.
Leinster & Munster manager Gerry Smith is looking forward to testing his players against King's side. "We’ve played the U21 home-based squad before and they were excellent games,"Smith said. "I know that a number of players who Noel selected in the past went on to earn contracts abroad and become U21 internationals in the past so they’ll be a squad with plenty to prove, which should give us a decent test."
The U17 matches on Tuesday and Thursday are Mohan's last chance to assess his side before March's European Qualification games with Serbia, Georgia, and Elite Stage group hosts Austria. Nine players have been included in the under-17 squad for the first time, including former England underage international Danny Crowley.
Speaking on the FAI's official website, Mohan explained that the friendlies were a great opportunity to look at new players ahead of the European Qualifiers. "It’s great to have the squad assemble again before our next European qualifier games in March," Mohan said. "Coupled with the training camp over Christmas, we will have seen over 60 players perform by then. We are missing a number of players due to injuries and Youth Cup fixtures, so some new players have been handed the opportunity to impress next week."
"Croatia are a strong squad, and have a similar style of play to Serbia and Georgia, who we are up against in our European qualifying group. We will use these two fixtures as an opportunity to experiment with the team before our crucial games next month."
