UCD have announced the signing of two players ahead of the new League of Ireland season. Gareth Matthews has returned to the club after two seasons with Shelbourne, while Gary Burke has been re-signed for the new Airtricity Premier Division campaign.
Students manager Martin Russell expressed his delight at the signings. "I’m happy to have the two lads back for the new season," Russell told the club's official website. "Both understand the philosophy of the club as they have been here before, I look forward to seeing them continue their development this season.
"Gareth is now an experienced player, he is competent on the ball, quick, strong and a good overall defender. I’m delighted to have him back with us for the new season."
Midfielder Burke played 14 times for the Dublin club last year, and is looking forward to another season at the College Bowl. “I'm delighted to be back for another season, UCD is a great club so I'm really looking forward to this season," Burke said. "I'm injury free which I'm delighted about as I have had a bad injury which prevented me from getting a preseason under my belt the last couple of years. Pre season is going well and it was great to get a game in against Athlone and we play Rovers today so hopefully we can do even better this year in the league and cups."
Matthews is expecting an exciting season ahead, with the students kicking off their 2013 Premier Division campaign on March 8th against Bohemians. “I feel the bigger teams in the league have gotten stronger with the signings made, but we just need to focus on our own game and with the young talent here at UCD I'm sure we can cause a few surprises during the season,” Matthews admitted.
