'It is important to give Forde the opportunity' - Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni

The Ireland manager believes that he must give the former Derry City and Galway United goalkeeper a chance between the posts as Keiren Westwood struggles at club level
Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has said that he would like to give David Forde an opportunity during the friendly international against Poland on February 6.

Speaking ahead of the game against Poland, Trapattoni indicated that he would like current number one choice Keiren Westwood to seek a move away from Sunderland if he cannot displace the favoured Simon Mignolet, but stressedd that he had sufficient strength in depth in the position of goalkeeper.

"Hopefully, in the future [Westwood] will have the chance to play but if the manager continued to pick [Simon] Mignolet then I told him that it would be good if he could change clubs," Trapattoni told reporters. "But with Forde, with him and with [Stephen] Henderson we will be okay."

It appears that Millwall shot-stopper Forde will be the main beneficiary of Westwood's lack of first-team action at club level, as Trapattoni referred to the importance of giving the player an opportunity to impress in the green shirt.

He said: "Both goalkeepers are similar. One is perhaps a little stronger, the other more elastic but it is important to give Forde the opportunity.

"Usually, as you know, I don't worry about whether a player who is his 20s plays or not, but for the goalkeeper it is particularly delicate position.

"It is more difficult psychologically when they don’t play a lot of games," added the Italian tactician.

Meanwhile, Derby County striker Conor Sammon has been praised by Trapattoni and looks set to feature in the friendly game against Poland.

"Physically he is strong," said Trapattoni. "Not only strong, but fast. And sometimes, these big strikers, they are not too much sensible with the ball, but he has a refined technique so he can bring others into the game."

The Republic of Ireland take on Poland in a friendly international at the Aviva Stadium on Wednesday February 6.
