The Candystripes shot-stopper has been added to Michael O'Neill's squad ahead of the friendly international against Malta on Wednesday February 6
The 31-year-old shot-stopper has been capped at youth level by the Republic of Ireland and the call-up marks his first for Northern Ireland.
Commenting on the call-up, the Doherty explained that he was 'delighted' with the news and that he was looking forward to meeting up with the squad.
He said: "[I'm] delighted at being called into the squad for the game. I can't wait to meet up with the players and get stuck into a few days training and see what happens for Wednesday."
Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill had recently earmarked Doherty, as well as Derry City duo Shane and Patrick McEleney, as players that he would keep an eye on.
"I keep a keen eye on [Shane and Patrick McELeney] as we have to give ourselves as many players to pick from as possible," said O'Neill. "But there's a number of players at Derry. Gerard Doherty is another example of that."
Northern Ireland face Malta at the Ta'Qali National Stadium on Wednesday, February 6.
