Roberto Martinez: James McCarthy is not for sale

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez insists that James McCarthy will not be leaving the club during the transfer window, despite the midfielder attracting interest from Everton
Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has played down speculation linking midfielder James McCarthy with Everton, insisting the Republic of Ireland international is not for sale.

Both McCarthy and Maynor Figueira have been linked with moves away from the DW Stadium, but Martinez has denied that either player is on the move.

"We've yet to receive any offers," said Martinez. "They're not for sale. I always said that it's a real compliment when you have teams looking at your players. It doesn't surprise me.

"We have players that can attract anyone's interest, but that won't bring any negatives towards the squad. It's a football compliment, a feel-good factor.

"Individual situations will always be resolved in the best interests of the football club."

Meanwhile, fellow Irish international Shane Long has also been the target of transfer talk this month, with Italian club Lazio rumoured to be interested in the West Bromwich Albion striker.  However, club boss Steve Clarke has also rubbished the move.

"The mention of him being linked with Lazio is all speculation," Clarke told reporters. "There has been one bid for one player [Jonas Olsson] and it has been turned down. So, for us, it's not a problem. It's easy to say no."
