Reading can survive relegation battle, says defender Alex Pearce

The Royals centre back believes that Brian McDermott's team has what it takes to get out of the relegation zone in the new year after a dismal start to the season
Reading defender Alex Pearce believes that his team have 'turned the corner' and can rise out of the relegation zone after their 1-0 home victory against West Ham on December 29.

The Royals currently lie in 19th position in the Premier League, having amassed just 13 points from 20 games, but Republic of Ireland international Pearce is confident that they can improve.

"We seem to have turned the corner with our defending," the 23-year-old told the Daily Star. "We had that little bit more going forward, but we had to get it right at the back first, build from there and now we can grind out the wins."

He continued: "We've gone back to basics. We’ve put an extra man in midfield and there's a lot more togetherness.

"We are competing for every ball and fighting for our lives. The team spirit is unbelievable. We really think we can get out of it," concluded Pearce.
