'I would be surprised if Brendan Rodgers wanted Shane Long' - West Brom manager Steve Clarke

The Baggies boss has quashed rumours linking the former Reading striker with a move to Anfield in January and said that he would be surprised if Liverpool were interested
West Brom manager Steve Clarke has moved to dismiss speculation linking striker Shane Long with a move to Liverpool in January.

Long, 25, has scored seven goals this season, helping his side into fifth position in the Premier League, and his performances for the Baggies have drawn praise from several quarters.

However, Clarke, rejected the notion that the Republic of Ireland international was on his way out of the Hawthorns, adding that he would be 'very surprised' is Liverpool were interested in the striker.

"Liverpool need a striker and Shane is playing well so a journalist has put it together and tried to make a story out of it, Clarke told the Birmingham Mail.

"Shane is not for sale and I’d be very surprised if Brendan Rodgers wanted to take Shane anyway," he added. "People are merely looking at connections and making stories out of it."

Shane Long joined West Brom in 2011 from Reading and has scored seven goals in 16 appearances for the club this season.
