West Brom striker Shane Long hopeful of cementing Ireland place

The Baggies forward admitted that there was stiff competition for a place in the Ireland team but is hopeful that he can do enough over the coming months to secure his position
West Brom striker Shane Long has said that he was pleased with his own performance in Ireland's 1-0 defeat to Greece on Wednesday November 14.

The Baggies forward limped off the field with a hamstring injury at the interval, but is hoping that he did enough to stake a strong claim for a starting position in the upcoming fixtures.

"I hope so. I feel like I’m playing well at club level and I think they were happy with my performance tonight," Long told Goal.com.

However the 25-year-old conceded that there is a lot of competition for the striker's position but remains hopeful of cementing his place through his performances at club level.

"The manager has a few different options to choose from," added Long. "There are a lot of strikers in the squad.

"I’ll just go back to West Brom and hopefully I’ll put in some good performances there over the next two or three months," concluded the striker.

The Republic of Ireland's next fixture sees them face off against Poland on February 6, 2013.
