Airtricity First Division: Matchday 26 - Limerick put one hand on title with win

Limerick FC scored a late winner against Athlone Town to heap pressure on Waterford United, who need three points to stay in the title race

Limerick FC 1-0 Athlone Town
Limerick FC moved seven points clear of Waterford United with a 1-0 win over Athlone Town. The win means that Waterford must record a win away at Finn Harps tomorrow night. Any other result will hand the title to Limerick.

The hosts had most of the ball in the first half, but could not find the net despite good efforts from Cian Collins and Denis Behan. At the other end, a rare Athlone Town chance almost opened the scoring, but Mark Sherlock saw his shot come back off the post.

Limerick increased the pressure after the break, and finally got the goal they deserved five minutes from time through Sean Brosnan. The win means Limerick FC have almost sealed the title, with just two games remaining.

Mervue United 0-0 Wexford Youths
Mervue United and Wexford Youths played out a dour scoreless draw at Fahy's Field.

Dean Broaders had the first real chance of the game, but shot straight at Mervue keeper Ger Hanley. Broaders brought Hanley into action again 10 minutes later, but his free kick was easy for the goalkeeper. Shaun Corcoran did well for Wexford, clearing off the line after Martin Conneely's shot went past Graham Doyle.

Broaders was Youths' brightest player after the break, while Stephen Walsh tested Doyle from range but neither side could carve out a game-winning chance.
