Shelbourne hold Millwall to scoreless draw in pre-season friendly
Ireland internationals Andy Keogh and David Forde are among the Lions' travelling party for pre-season warm-up fixtures but Tolka Park clash produced few highlights
Millwall began their pre-season tour of Ireland with a 0-0 draw against Shelbourne at Tolka Park on Monday evening.Goalmouth incidents were at a premium as both managers used the game to give their squads some game time.
Kenny Jackett announced before the game he would field two different XIs in either half to ensure all of his touring party got some minutes under their belt in the Lions’ first pre-season game.
There were plenty of familiar faces in the Millwall starting line-up with Northern Ireland goalkeeper Maik Taylor taking his place between the sticks while Republic of Ireland forward Andy Keogh started up front.
After the early exchanges the visitors were soon into their stride with James Henry smacking a free kick into the wall on eight minutes with Shaun Batt and Keogh looking lively up front.
Keogh should have put his side in front with 23 minutes on the clock, finding himself with only Jeffrey Wijnen to beat, but the Shels keeper came to the rescue.
Wijnen was then forced to keep out a stinging drive from new boy Chris Taylor as Millwall piled on more pressure, forcing a series of corners.
There was a blow for the visitors when Henry took a knock and had to be replaced by Aiden O'Brien eight minutes before the break.
Shelbourne then began to find some attacking openings themselves, with Barry Clancy seeing a volley blocked and Sean Byrne firing a free kick into the wall from long range.
Both managers made wholesale changes at the break as the second period produced a few more talking points.
David Forde, who was part of Ireland’s Euro 2012 squad, came on at the break and had to be alert to deny Philly Gorman from a Liam Feeney’s weak back pass.
The game seemed to open up in the second period and Feeney went close from just inside the Shels box before David Cassidy looked to outwit Forde from long range but the ‘keeper recovered just in time to tip his 35-yard effort over the bar.
Perhaps the closest the game came to seeing a goal was in the final minute when John Marquis’ free kick struck Chris Bennion’s upright.
The Championship club play two more friendlies during their trip to the Emerald Isle with a visit to Longford Town up next before a trip up north to face Glenavon on Saturday.
