The Scotland-born goalkeeper has signed a short-term deal which will see him stay at the club until the end of the current campaign.
The 31-year-old joins Shels after being released by Monaghan United following their demise.
Bennion will be a familiar face to the Tolka Park faithful as he previously spent two seasons with Shels. He was part of Pat Fenlon’s league winning squad of 2003 before moving to Dundalk for regular first team football.
Before his first spell at Shelbourne, Bennion played for Middlesbrough where he was the understudy to Mark Schwarzer and Mark Crossley but limited first-team opportunities meant he was loaned out to Scunthorpe where, again, his playing time was minimal.
Bennion has played over 200 League of Ireland games and will provide Dean Delany with some competition for the number one jersey at Tolka Park.
Shelbourne host Dundalk on Friday evening in the Airtricity Premier Division.
