Shamrock Rovers into Leinster Senior Cup final with big win over Shelbourne
Shamrock Rovers reached the Leinster Senior Cup final for the first time since 2000 with a 4-2 win over Shelbourne at Tolka Park
Four first-half goals gave Shamrock Rovers a deserved 4-2 win over Shelbourne at Tolka Park to send Stephen Kenny's side into the final, and perhaps ease some pressure on the underperforming manager.Shamrock Rovers got off to a great start when Killian Brennan put them ahead in the fifth minute. Brennan struck from a free-kick after Daryl Kavanagh was fouled on the edge of the area. Reyaad Pieterse returned to the Hoops starting eleven for the cup game, but did not look comfortable coming for the ball. However, Shels could not take advantage despite having plenty of the ball, and saw themselves four down at the interval.
Two goals in three minutes left Shelbourne with little chance of getting back into the game. Aaron Greene headed in Brennan's corner, and Paul Skinner should have done better, but the Shelbourne keeper could do nothing about Daryl Kavanagh's sweetly struck volley.
Shelbourne allowed Chris Turner too much time on the ball for Rovers' fourth in the 44th minute, as the midfielder fired it past Skinner from long-range. Shelbourne boss Alan Matthews sent on Barry Clancy for the second half, but faced a tough task getting back into the game.
Shels did claw two goals back, but didn't create enough to really look like causing a shock. Philly Hughes netted the first consolation goal in the 73rd minute and Philly Gorman scored the second in stoppage time to make it 4-2.
