Derry City unsuccessful in appeal against Uefa Europa League ban

Liquidation in 2009 under the previous regime has denied the Candystripes their place in the 2012-13 edition of the Europa League

Derry City have been denied a licence to compete in the 2012-13 Europa League.

The Airtricity Premier Division side appealed against Uefa's three-year European suspension levied against them following their expulsion from the League of Ireland in 2009 after going into liquidation.

The Candystripes finished third in the Premier Division last season but their place in the European competition now goes to Bohemians, who finished fifth.

Derry City are in the last year of their suspension and, with the support of the FAI, had lodged an appeal with Uefa to relax its restrictions as the club is new entity.

That appeal was unsuccessful and Declan Devine's side will now miss out on a guaranteed €110,000.

A statement on the FAI website reads: "The Football Association of Ireland today [Tuesday] confirmed receipt of UEFA’s decision not to grant Derry City FC permission to apply for a licence to play in UEFA competition for the season 2012-13. An application was made to UEFA for a derogation of the ‘three-year’ rule, arguing that the club was a new entity, and as such was entitled to apply for a licence. The Association will consult with the club regarding the matter and both parties will study the decision in the coming days. Should no appeal of this decision be made to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), Bohemian FC will be nominated for UEFA competition in place of Derry City FC."
