The former Three Lions coach believes Roy Hodgson has a lot to consider in regards to a possible recall for the Chelsea captain after reports claimed he could make a comeback
After it emerged that the Chelsea captain had set his sights on World Cup 2014, however, McClaren predicted that age could hold Terry back in his apparent desire to make a return for his country.
"You look at what's happened off the field, what's happened on the squad, internally what can happen, but also it's form as well," McClaren told BBC Radio 5 Live.
"John Terry also is progressing in age and Chelsea are rotating him, so it's purely on form and Roy Hodgson looking ahead to the future.
"So if you look ahead to the future will John Terry in one, two, three, four years be involved in that?
"I think Roy Hodgson has a decision to make as to whether to go for the future or whether to win in the short term."
Terry has made 78 appearances for England, captaining the side on 34 occasions.
