Juan Mata has revealed that the Chelsea squad are not happy with their recent performances.
The Blues meet Manchester United this weekend, lying currently 12 points behind the champions in the Premier League, but the diminutive Spaniard hopes the clash can kick-start his side's season.
“The whole squad is not content with our game at the moment," Mata told the Daily Mirror.
"We are not functioning well enough in the Premier League and we need a quick reaction. That is our main objective.
“You can never say anything is impossible in football. But at the moment the gap is too big between us and the Manchester clubs. There’s too many points.
“We need to reduce the gap on Spurs but to do that we need to keep winning - just win, win and win.
“That’s why the match with United is so important to us in terms of belief and morale - to beat the champions is very important and that’s the challenge for the whole squad. We are all very focused on this game."
The four-time champions have struggled for consistency this season, having not put together a winning streak of more than three games and struggled for goals from their forwards all season.
But Mata has backed manager Andre Villas-Boas to improve the squad's mental strength and has backed out-of-sorts striker Fernando Torres to come good against the Red Devils.
He continued: “Villas-Boas says it is a question of mentality and we can develop a superior game.
“We need to rediscover our best level because we are entering a very important time now with the Champions League and Premier League.
“For a forward like Fernando not to score is agony because he is such a great player. But he can end that at any time and Sunday could be the perfect day.
“His belief is good. I know he believes in himself and that is important."
The Spanish number 10 expressed his excitement at taking on the champions at Stamford Brdige on Sunday and lauded United's squad, despite their current injury woes.
Mata added: “I know United from my time at Valencia and it is a sensational squad. Players missing or not, we know it will be a hard match as both teams need the victory.
“Perhaps the danger is their midfield. Even if they miss Nani we must stop their forwards getting service.
“[Paul] Scholes and [Ryan] Giggs are legends in football. It’s a great challenge to play against them and something to remember.”
