The experienced midfielder is eagerly anticipating Wednesday's match against the Ukrainian champions and is confident of getting a good result
The Bundesliga side impressed in the group stages of the competition, and Kehl is hopeful that they can keep up their good form in Wednesday's first leg in Donetsk.
"In spite of their winter break, we have enough information on Shakhtar. We clearly understand what to expect," Kehl said at a press conference.
"They will be backed by a full stadium, but it will not bother us as we will be fully concentrated on the game."
Kehl has had little success in Europe so far in his career, but he hopes to go all the way in the Champions League this time around.
"I will not have many more opportunities to win something big, but we want to start doing so on Wednesday," said the 33-year-old.
"It is always a pleasure to take part in European competitions, but you do not just need skill to win in the Champions League – it is a matter of experience.
"I hope we will be lucky enough to win something this season – it would be even more special at my age."
Wednesday's match against Shakhtar is scheduled to kick off at 20:45CET.
