Fifa opens Mohamed bin Hammam investigation

The world football governing body have begun the trial of the former Asian Football Confederation president, over a breach of regulations

The Fifa Ethics Committee have opened investigatory proceedings against the former Asian Football Confederation president Mohamed bin Hammam.

The Qatari was banned from taking part in "any kind of football-related activity" for 90 days, on July 26 2012, after he was found guilty of bribery in his bid to become president of Fifa back in 2010.

He was originally handed a lifetime ban, before that ruling was annulled by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on July 19, on the grounds of insufficient evidence.

Bin Hammam was a former running mate of Sepp Blatter during previous presidential campaigns, and provided his private jet on various campaign trails, but was accused of bribery when he went up against the Swiss in 2010.

Prior to the scandal, the 63-year-old had played a vital role in bringing the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.
