Palermo recall Gasperini for shock return after Malesani exit
Palermo fired their recently-appointed coach on Sunday after just 19 days in charge and have surprisingly recalled former boss Gasperini as his replacement
Palermo have re-appointed Gian Piero Gasperini as boss after announcing the dismissal of coach Alberto Malesani. The 58-year-old succeeded Gasperini as head coach of the Rosanero in early February but, following a run of three successive draws and with the club still rooted to the foot of the Serie A table, it appears the former Genoa boss has exhausted the patience of club president Maurizio Zamparini.
Following the dismissal, the club released a statement on their official website confirming Gasperini's recall.
"Palermo has announced that we have dismissed Alberto Malesani and recalled Gian Piero Gasperini," the statement read.
"There is regret considering Alberto is a great person and a great coach. We thank him for the attempt but the decision seemed to be the only viable one at this difficult time."
Gasperini, 55, becomes Zamparini's 26th managerial appointment since 2002.
Palermo resume their Serie A survival mission with a trip to Torino on March 3.
