The holding midfielder has complete confidence in his compatriot and insists he can still develop into a fine player, despite struggling to make an impact at San Siro
The 24-year-old has struggled to live up to expectations ever since he joined Inter from Velez Sarsfield in the summer of 2011, but Cambiasso feels it is too early to write him off just yet.
"I'm sure he's got what it takes to become a great player. I think he and some of the other lads joined Inter in a season that was tough for everyone," Cambiasso told Inter Channel.
"It was tough for those of us who had been here for years so we weren't even able to help them out at a difficult time. Unfortunately we couldn't make it easy for them to settle in.
"Then Ricky started this year with a knee operation. But I'm not worried if he messes up a pass or a dribble; I'd be surprised if he didn't try it because he's the sort of player who wants to be on the ball all the time and I think players like that deserve credit."
Alvarez has made nine appearances for Inter this term, but has yet to find the net.
