The former Shelbourne winger believes that the Candystripes have what it takes to secure league honours and believes that 2013 may just be the club's year

New Derry City signing Paddy Kavanagh has stated his belief that the Candystripes can win the Premier Division title in 2013.

Kavanagh, 26, recently signed for the Foylesiders from Dublin side Shelbourne and he believes that the club has what it takes to win the league.

"First and foremost, I want to win something with Derry City and I think 2013 could well prove to be the club’s year to win the Premier Division title," he told the Derry Journal.

He continued: "I remember reading that, on occasions (last season), Derry had to plan without eight to 10 players for certain matches last year. They had lost the spine of the team, yet they still qualified for all the major competitions.

"I think if they had the use of all their players, then they really could have gone on and challenge Sligo Rovers for the title."

Meanwhile, Derry City have been on the trail of Dundalk striker Mark Griffin, but have cooled interest after the Lilywhites placed a 25,000 price tag on the player.

"Mark ticks all our boxes in terms of age and ability and the fact that he has already played in the Premier Division is another advantage," said Derry manager Declan Devine.

"However, with a £20,000 (25,000) fee now on his head, we must focus our attentions elsewhere as we continue to build a squad for the 2013 campaign," he said.
