Rekik in line for Netherlands debut as Sneijder misses out again

The young centre-back has been called up for the first time in his career, while the experienced midfielder has once more been snubbed
Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal has opted to leave Wesley Sneijder out of his provisional 22-man squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Estonia on September 6 and versus Andorra four days later.

The Galatasaray playmaker already missed the international friendly versus Portugal after previously being stripped of the captain's armband for Oranje's Asian tour earlier this summer and has once more been omitted from Van Gaal's squad for next month's games.

Other notable absentees are Fulham goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg and Everton defender John Heitinga, while Tim Krul, Kevin Strootman, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Daryl Janmaat have been left out due to fitness issues.

Manchester City defender Karim Rekik, currently on loan at PSV, has been called up for the first time, while Jeffrey Bruma returns after a lengthy absence.

Augsburg defender Paul Verhaegh has also made the cut again after making his debut in the draw with Portugal earlier this month.

Netherlands currently sit top of Group D with 18 points from six games, holding a seven-point lead over second-placed Hungary.
