The Paraguay striker pushed his coach after Benfica were beaten in the final of the Portuguese cup, although he could yet face disciplinary proceedings from the club

Benfica striker Oscar Cardozo has apologised to supporters after shoving coach Jorge Jesus following his side’s defeat in the Portuguese cup final.

Cardozo pushed Jesus before gesturing angrily at the substitutes’ bench following his side’s 2-1 loss to Vitoria Guimaraes on Sunday, but the Paraguay international later admitted it was simply a snap reaction to a disastrous final few weeks of the season for the Eagles.

"I apologise to all Benfica fans and want you to know I have this club in my heart. It was a terrible and nerve wrecking end of season and I hope you never doubt my passion. I love Benfica,” Cardozo wrote on his official Facebook page on Monday.

Sunday’s defeat compounded an agonising end to the campaign for Benfica, after they were pipped to the Primeira Liga title by rivals Porto following a last-gasp defeat at Estadio Dragao before suffering at the hands of another injury-time goal in the Europa League final against Chelsea.

Jesus confirmed after the match that Cardozo had apologised in the dressing room for what was a momentary loss of control.

"Cardozo was hot-headed at that very complicated moment. He later apologised in the locker room," Jesus told reporters.

Despite issuing immediate apologies, Cardozo could yet face disciplinary action from the club for his indiscretion.

The 30-year-old is Benfica’s record goalscorer in European competition, and the club’s highest-scoring foreign player of all time, having netted 105 times in just over 150 appearances since arriving at Estadio da Luz in 2007.
