The Netherlands international, whose contract with VfB Stuttgart is to run out in June, shrugs off possibility of returning to play in the Dutch league

Thirty-year-old defender Khalid Boulahrouz has rubbished talks of a possible comeback to play in his native Netherlands in the foreseeable future.

The Stuttgart centre-back will be without a contract in June and he has expressed his wish to move to Serie A rather than the Eredivisie. He was said to be monitored by AC Milan earlier this year to provide some competition to much-maligned Philippe Mexes, though he was quoted in Dutch magazine Voetbal International as "not knowing how serious their interest is".

He also said he thought "[his] style would suit the Serie A well", as he confirmed plans to meet his agent soon to try to find a solution to his contract woes before the start of the 2012 European Championship. Describing Serie A as a "dream", he also spoke of his alleged rebuttal to Dutch sides interested in his services, most notably Ajax.

"Some Dutch media made up a story based on the conjecture of Vertonghen leaving and me becoming a free agent at the same time. However I want to play in a better league, either Serie A or some other," Boulahrouz said.

The defender is to be offloaded as part of Stuttgart's plans to rejuvenate their squad with younger players. He joined the Baden-Wurttemberg side four years ago from Chelsea.
