With all four Group H teams still eligible to advance, the reigning Thai champions could still progress despite Tuesday night's loss at J-League holders Kashiwa Reysol
After a 1-0 defeat at J-League champions Kashiwa Reysol, the Thai club sits in last place with six points in Group H. But with Jeonbuk Motors on top with nine points and Guangzhou Evergrande and Reysol following with seven apiece, all four teams will have an opportunity to advance to the Round of 16 with a win on May 15, the final day of the group stage.
“We were unlucky because Ekwalla Herman got a red card early in the game, which made it very difficult for us to play,” Chidchob told reporters. “However the gaps between the teams in Group H aren’t far apart so we haven’t lost our chance.
"Compared to the previous game, the lads have shown that they have improved a lot and are capable of squaring off against the top teams in Asia.”
In the final match, Buriram will host Evergrande at Buriram Stadium, while Reysol will visit Jeonbuk.
“Anything can happen in football, that’s why we still have a possibility in the last match," Chidchob continued. "I’m calling for the fan club of Buriram and Thai people who love football to cheer and support our home game in the hopes of securing a spot in the last 16.”
The two clubs able to advance from Group H will play either Japan's FC Tokyo or Korea's Ulsan Hyundai on May 30 after those two sides clinched berths in the knockout stage with wins on Wednesday night.
