The veteran striker took his League of Ireland tally to 202 goals with four in a nine-goal thriller at the UCD BowlJason Byrne scored four goals as Bray Wanderers recorded a big win over UCD in an exciting encounter at the UCD Bowl. Goals from Cillian Morrison, David McMillan, David O'Connor, and Robert Creevy kept the hosts in contention, but Byrne's contribution as well as an Ismahil Akinade strike gave the Seagulls victory.
The Students took first blood through Cillian Morrison after just four minutes, heading in from a free-kick. However, their lead lasted just 10 minutes as Bray struck back through Ismahil Akinade, who scored a stunning strike from outside the area.
Morrison had the ball in the net on 20 minutes, but was ruled offside. Both sides created chances in an entertaining affair, but it was Bray who were clear at half-time thanks to two quickfire goals from in-form attacker Jason Byrne. The veteran was handed his first after a mistake from Mark McGinley, and got the second when UCD failed to clear the danger in first-half stoppage time.
The visitors started the second-half better, with Byrne bagging his hat-trick on the hour mark with a fine finish. A penalty from David McMillan gave the Students a lifeline three minutes later after being fouled by Dave Webster in the area. David O'Connor moved UCD closer 13 minutes from time with a well-taken header.
However, the comeback ended on 84 minutes as Jason Byrne popped up once again to add his fourth of the game, and 202th League of Ireland goal overall. Robert Creevy grabbed a consolation goal in stoppage time. Bray's win sees them move three points ahead of UCD, and further from the relegation zone.
