Very little to do in the first half. Nothing he could do about Cristiano Ronaldo's wonderful backheel goal, but made a hash of a free-kick from the Portuguese not long afterwards, which he was lucky to get away with. Later cut out a diagonal ball with Higuain ready to pounce and saved well from another Ronaldo set piece. Went up to try and score a late leveler.
Helped keep Ronaldo quiet as he forced the Portuguese inside, but had problems when Marcelo doubled up down the left. Came close to scoring with a wonderful drive in the second half from long range which Casillas kept out with a fine save.
Worked tremendously hard in defence and limited Madrid to very few opportunities in the first half. Also got forward to send a header over the bar at the other end.
Solid at left-back, but beaten for pace by Higuain at times. Forced Ozil back and tried to get forward as often as possible too.
Good partnership with Pulido in the centre of the Rayo defence as the home side snuffed out the threat posed by the visitors for the first half and much of the game. Occasionally troubled by the pace of Higuain but limited the influence of Kaka and Ozil.
Set up Michu for a glorious chance after 72 minutes, but the striker blasted over the bar. Good movement in the final third with plenty of dangerous balls, but failed to poke home when presented with a glorious opportunity on the goal line late on.
A physical presence in the centre of midfield as he worked hard to deny Madrid the ball. Put in a shift defensively and was positive in possession as well.
Worked extremely hard in central midfield as he put in a lot of good defensive work, tracked back and put in a number of important tackles. Eventually tired and was replaced midway through the second half.
A lively presence in attack for the home side but he missed a wonderful chance to level when he blasted over in the second half with only Casillas to beat. Was then scandalously sent off for a non-existent foul on Khedira.
Became Pepe's latest victim as he suffered a stamp from the defender early on. Then gave the ball away in a dangerous position, but later cut into the area and unleashed a thunderous drive which crashed into the post in the first half. So unlucky.
Excellent work-rate and movement up front, he thought he should have had a penalty in the first half as he took an elbow in the face from Sergio Ramos. Booked for protesting and unlucky with the decision. Gave Ramos and Pepe a lot to think about.
Had to be alert to deal with crosses into his area and was relieved to see Piti's shot rattle the woodwork when he was beaten in he first half. Made a brilliant save to push Tito's venemous shot past the post after the break.
Lucky to get away with a stamp on Piti early in the game as the negative aspect to his play appeared once again. Given problems by the pace and movement of Armenteros, Michu and Diego Costa but made one great second-half intervention and was more solid than his central defensive partner.
Very fortunate to avoid a red card for an elbow on Diego Costa and made a terrible error in the second half which allowed Armenteros to square for the unmarked Michu, who didn't take advantage. Pulled all over the place and will be relieved to have got away with a poor performance on the day.
Got forward well but not as often as he should have done. Set up Ozil for a good chance early on, but the German's finish was disappointing. Then got around the back of the Rayo defence but lacked support in another move. Linked up well with Ronaldo but was forced back at times as Rayo pressed.
A tidy game on the whole but he doesn't offer enough going forward and Madrid missed an attacking full-back down the right-hand side. He was turned easily by Piti as well and will have been happy to see his rival's rifled effort rebound against the post.
Less involved than usual as Madrid struggled in the centre of the park. Unable to find his usual range of passing and was guilty of losing the ball at times. Worked hard for the entire 90 minutes and looked more comfortable in a midfield three late on.
It's either good or bad from the Brazilian of late and this was very much the latter as he struggled to make any impact at all. Unable to pick out Higuain's runs, offered little defensively and looked both slow and sluggish. Replaced on the hour.
Worked hard defensively and provided much-needed support for his back four, but didn't do much positive work with the ball. His exaggerated reaction (he may have fallen awkwardly) saw Michu sent off late on when it wasn't even a foul.
Ozil had little joy after wasting a good opportunity early on, when he had been set up by Marcelo. Worked hard but was lacking his usual trickery and the game passed him by much of the time.
The pick of the bunch for his side once more and eventually made the difference with a quite stunning backheeled effort as he improvised with his back to goal. Came close to another when he lashed into the side netting and tested Joel with a fierce free-kick as well.
A willing runner, but he didn't look sharp. Made a mess of a one-on-one with Joel early on as he delayed and was forced wide by the Rayo defence. Beaten to another ball by the goalkeeper in the second half and drifted offside too often. Disappointing.
- 1 Cobeño
- 15 Raúl Bravo
- 32 P. Diamanka
Came on for Movilla and gave Rayo a creative spark in the middle as they chased the game in the last 20 minutes.
- 23 A. Delibašić
Came on for the last half an hour and worked hard, but failed to make a real impact on the game.
Little influence after coming on late in the game.
- 13 Adán
Came on and tucked in at left-back as Marcelo moved forward. Defended bravely and worked tirelessly as Madrid were left hanging on at the end.
- 2 Ricardo Carvalho
- 18 Albiol
Came on for the last 10 minutes to close up the midfield as Marcelo made way.
Looked lively as he came on as a late substitute and almost scored, but was unable to find the target from close range when he only had Joel to beat.
